Dunkeld House Opening Day 2025

 Well Wednesday was the river Tay opening day of the 2025 season, And what a great day it was. In the afternoon Rab Tam and myself were out harling the Lady pool when all hell broke loose as the poker rod buckled we kinda new very quickly that this was our first springer . And with about 15 minute battle the fish hit the net, its quickly weighed in the weigh net it was 19 lb and quickly released back to the river untouched by human hand as it should be. This fish gave us the Redford trophy and also the first salmon caught in Scotland this season .

Opening week on the River Tay on the Dunkeld House Beat . We opened the river on Monday with the usual tradition, a cold start but not bad the river was a bit on the low side this week . but it was good to see the changes to the beat after last Octobers floods, there is some very nice changes to few pools . Wednesday and Thursday were rather cold with temp at the hut being -9 so bit on the cold side . Friday saw a nice change in the temperature coming up and starting a thaw of snow and ice . Saturday the river was starting to slowly rise and the kelts really switched on . Satarday night into Sunday will see a good rise with the heavy rain coming . Should set up next week nice if everything settles down .

The last two days its been a bit on the cold side with temp being -9 the other morning at the hut . milder weather on the way for the weekend and next week .

Caught on the Harl in the tail of the Gauge pool and took nearly 50 minutes to land, the big fish are still there. We had 4 spring salmon landed this week with a few others on. Its also a good idea to always carry a landing net so you can keep the fish in the water to unhook it.

The early part of the season on the Tay is very different from the warmer water off April on wards. This time of year to put your chances more in your favour with the right selection of tackle. You don't need to carry loads of flys just a few good patterns tied in different sizes and weights . The key is to fish your fly deep and slow. So make sure you carry a good selection of lines and good sink tips to get your fly down to the fish .
